Connecting your trainer using Wi‑Fi

Wi‑Fi is becoming a widely supported way to connect smart trainers, and it’s now available in ROUVY, too. This guide walks you through the benefits, the basics, and how to get started.

What is Wi‑Fi trainer connectivity?

ROUVY tip:
If your current Bluetooth setup works fine, there’s no need to switch.
Wi‑Fi is simply an additional option, not a requirement.

Wi‑Fi is a newer connection method that complements traditional options like Bluetooth and ANT+.

It’s now supported by leading manufacturers like Wahoo, Elite, and Tacx. If your trainer and setup support Wi‑Fi, it can offer a more stable and reliable connection.

Why use a Wi‑Fi connection?

Wi‑Fi has a few key advantages:

  • Stable connection: Less prone to dropouts compared to Bluetooth.
  • More data throughput: Ideal for high-volume data exchange like ERG control and gradient simulation.
  • Remote firmware updates: Manufacturers can push updates to your trainer automatically.
  • Better for Apple TV users: Wi‑Fi bypasses Bluetooth device limits.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Initial Wi-Fi setup is done in the trainer manufacturer’s app, not in ROUVY. We’ve added helpful links below, but always follow the complete instructions provided by the manufacturer.
  • Same network required: Your trainer and the device running ROUVY must be connected to the same Wi‑Fi network for things to work properly.
  • Check Wi‑Fi compatibility: Some trainers only support specific Wi‑Fi bands, usually 2.4 GHz. Be sure your Wi‑Fi matches what your trainer needs.
  • Not all trainers support Wi‑Fi: Wi‑Fi is generally available on newer models. If you don’t see the option, your trainer may not support it.
  • Rare network issues: In some cases, advanced router settings (like security protocols or isolation modes) can block connections, but this is rare. Follow the manufacturer’s setup steps, and you should be good to go.

How to set up your Wi‑Fi on your trainer

Each manufacturer has their own instructions for connecting your trainer via Wi‑Fi. Use the links below to find the right guide for your device:

Check our list of supported trainers to quickly see if your trainer supports a Wi-Fi connection.

IMPORTANT: All of these trainers work only on 2.4 GHz networks, so make sure your Wi‑Fi isn’t limited to 5 GHz only.

In the Sensors dashboard:

  • Make sure that a Wi-Fi icon in the top right corner is bright white; this means that it is active.
  • In case it is grey, you need to check that wi-fi connectivity in the app is turned on:
    • go back to the app dashboard, to the menu under your profile icon in the top-right corner, and choose 'Settings',
    • in the 'General' tab under 'Features', find a 'Wi-Fi Connectivity' toggle and turn it on.

  • Go back to the sensors dashboard.
  • On the 'Smart trainer / Smart bike / Power meter' tile, tap 'Add Trainer.'
  • From the list, select your trainer.
If your trainer supports remote resistance control via Wi-Fi, select it as Controllable (this allows ROUVY to adjust resistance based on route gradients).
If your trainer supports cadence or power only, choose those accordingly.
  • Click 'Save & Close.'

You’re good to go! Return to the home screen, select your route, and tap 'Start Ride'.

Trainer not appearing in the list?

  • Make sure it’s properly connected to Wi-Fi and broadcasting its data. Check that you've set it up correctly using your trainer manufacturer's instructions.
  • Make sure you have Wi-Fi connectivity on in the ROUVY app.

Resistance isn’t changing during rides?

  • Double‑check that the trainer supports Wi-Fi resistance control.
  • Check that your trainer is set as 'Controllable' in the ROUVY app.
