The height profile directly shapes how climbs and descents of your route feel on your smart trainer.
While adjusting it is optional, a well-tuned profile makes your route feel much closer to the real world.
Taking a few minutes to review and refine the elevation helps make sure that:
- Climbs feel natural and progressive,
- Descents reflect real-world gradients,
- The route matches the original terrain more accurately.
Here’s how to edit it effectively.
Before you start
Start by reviewing the entire route to spot any inconsistencies in elevation.
Use Google Elevation (Map)
Turn on Google Elevation (Map) as a visual reference.

Use the timeline
Use the timeline to highlight the exact section you want to edit. Then use the available tools to edit the section.
Selecting the right segment is the most important step before applying any changes.
Main editing tools
Once your segment is selected, you can adjust the profile using these tools:
Move selected points (smooth) | This tool lets you move selected points with a smooth, natural transition. |
Move selected points (hard) | This tool also moves multiple selected points but with minimal smoothing on the edges. |
Flatten tool | Flattens the selected section completely. |
Clamp to selected profile | Fits the selected section to a chosen reference profile. |
Smooth tool | Smoothers the selected section for a more natural gradient. Click and drag to use. |
Using reference profiles
For higher accuracy, you can compare your route against external data. Click 'Display profiles' to import and overlay a custom route profile from platforms like Strava or Mapy.cz. |
Once imported:
- A new reference curve is generated.
- You can visually compare it with your current profile.
- You can fine-tune your route to better match the original data.
You can display up to five profiles at once:
- Legacy,
- GPS,
- Map,
- Original,
- Custom (imported).
Overlaying multiple profiles makes it easier to spot differences and adjust your route accordingly.
Best practices for accurate elevation
If you plan to modify the height profile, keep these in mind:
- Always highlight the exact segment before editing.
- Cross-check GoPro data with external sources.
- Add custom elevation profiles for better accuracy.
- Start small and refine adjustments gradually.
- Compare against mapping platforms like Strava. Take your time comparing profiles before making changes.
- You can always undo changes or reset the height profile.
Combining multiple data sources helps verify gradients and elevation changes, leading to a more accurate and realistic ride.
